SET

โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โฏจ4.5 / 5 โ€“ editorial rating

Four features, one glance: first to spot a valid set wins it โ€“ concentration in its purest form.

How it plays

Twelve cards lie face up. Each shows symbols with four features: shape, color, number, shading. A "set" is three cards where each feature is either identical on all three or different on all three. Spot one, call "Set!" and take the cards โ€“ everyone searches simultaneously, nobody waits.

What it trains

SET is concentrated visual analysis: four feature dimensions must be checked in parallel and recombined constantly. That engages selective attention, working memory and flexible hypothesis-building all at once โ€“ and since pattern recognition doesn't depend on age, practiced kids beat their parents regularly.

Community voices: A cult game with a mathematical backbone and a loyal following; widely awarded. Reviews explicitly praise the "training effect" โ€“ you measurably improve. The first round takes patience, then it carries you for years.
Our tip for parents: Kids often beat the adults here โ€“ a wonderful confidence booster.

Especially good for

  • Concentration-strong kids from 8
  • Mathematically minded families
  • Also playable solo as daily brain training

Less suitable for

  • Children with color vision deficiency (color is a feature!)
  • Anyone who switches off at abstract games
